Mobility Elevator & Lift recently had the privilege of completing the installation of a wheelchair lift in the official residence of the governor of New Jersey, the Drumthwacket, in Princeton, NJ. The lift was installed to improve wheelchair access in compliance with Federal and State codes, and the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA).

To provide a bit of history, the land on which the Drumthwacket resides was originally purchased by William Penn, a Quaker, in the late 1600s. Over the years, it was passed along to other well-known figures such as Charles Smith Olden and Abram Nathanial Spanel. In 1966, Spanel sold the Drumthwacket to the State of New Jersey to be used as the Governor’s residence. In the present day, The Drumthwacket Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization was established. Its mission is to “increase a sense of pride in New Jersey by preserving the Drumthwacket property […] expanding civic understanding amongst New Jerseyians.”

To adhere to ADA requirements, Mobility Elevator installed two models of wheelchair lifts including the Savaria model Omega custom stair incline wheelchair lift with parking bend at top landing and the Savaria model V-1504 Enclosure including a prefabricated enclosure and plexiglass panels. Each contains their own unique features.

The Savaria model Omega is an inexpensive alternative to a vertical lift. It can be easily adapted into existing space without the need for significant renovations. If there is one place that needs ADA compliance, it’s a University. Recently, Mobility Elevator completed an installation of a wheelchair lift in a Rutgers University, physics lecture hall. This custom made incline wheelchair lift features a curving track which fits seamlessly along the staircase to provide wheelchair access for students and professors, and comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Due to the lectures hall’s number of steps as well as its non-straight walled architecture, a very specific type model was required.

The chosen wheelchair lift model is the Model Omega manufactured by Savaria. The Omega model was chosen over its counterpart, the Delta Model, as it handles multiple levels, turning stairs, curved stairs or stairs with intermediate landings. An additional benefit, beyond its ability to fit along curved stairways, is the avoidance of any major construction in preparation of installing the lift. Securely installed along a side wall (or stanchions), the platform glides along its rail when in use and folds up when idle. When an elevator or vertical lift is not easily accommodated for cost or construction concerns, a Savaria inclined platform lift is an excellent option for accessibility, with space and cost savings.

Another benefit, specifically regarding ADA compliance, is an optional large ADA-compliant platform, which is ideal for public accessibility requirements.
